Frilled Neck Lizard - Acrylic paint on canvas 80cm x 80cm
In the 1990’s I moved to the South East Queensland area where I ran a Native Animal rehabilitation and release project from my property. The property bordered a wildlife corridor which was a perfect release site for the ringtail possums and sugar gliders which were rehabilitated and released. During this period I was able to interact with and study a large variety of Australian wildlife at close range, not only the creatures that we were rehabilitating, but a wide variety of other native wildlife who visited the property. It was during this period that my interest in art was rekindled and I began painting wildlife.
Prior to moving to Australia, I lived in the Caribbean for a couple of years working part-time as a silk artist. This period spent working with textiles created a keen interest in textures which I am now increasingly incorporating as backgrounds into my artwork. In the natural world interesting textures exist everywhere and reflect a creature’s environment - an important feature which I feel necessary to include in my wildlife portraits.
